Programme Overview

This is an entry-level pharmacy learnership designed for individuals interested in becoming Basic Pharmacist Assistants. Learners gain hands-on practical experience in a professional pharmacy environment while completing the required training for registration with the South African Pharmacy Council (SAPC).

Successful completion can lead to permanent employment within Dis-Chem Pharmacies.


Key Responsibilities

  • Medication Dispensing Support:
    • Assist with preparation and dispensing of Schedule 1 medicines
    • Follow approved formulas and SOPs under pharmacist supervision
  • Prescription & Patient Support:
    • Learn to interpret prescriptions accurately
    • Pick, pack, and label medicines correctly
    • Check dosages and possible drug interactions
  • Stock Management & Merchandising:
    • Unpack, organise, and monitor pharmacy stock
    • Maintain dispensary cleanliness and medicine expiry checks
    • Report low stock or discrepancies
  • Customer Service & Communication:
    • Assist patients with queries and prescription follow-ups
    • Support medical aid authorisations and chronic medication approvals
  • Administrative Support:
    • Use pharmacy systems (e.g., Unisolv, SAP, E-Scripting)
    • Record and maintain accurate data and reports

Minimum Requirements

  • Grade 12 (Matric) or Senior Certificate
  • Pure Mathematics: Minimum 50%
  • Life Sciences or Physical Science: Minimum 50%
  • Strong willingness to learn and develop professionally
