Job Summary
The South African National Blood Service (SANBS) is seeking a General Laboratory Assistant to support blood bank operations. The role involves preparing and managing blood hampers, assisting with laboratory cleaning and maintenance, and ensuring proper waste disposal in line with Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs). The position plays an important role in maintaining safety, cleanliness, and efficiency within the blood bank laboratory environment.
Key Responsibilities
Blood Hamper Preparation & Stock Handling
- Prepare and collect blood hampers according to SOPs
- Retrieve unused and empty hampers from wards and collection points
- Check hampers for seals, integrity, and proper contents
- Store blood products in fridges, freezers, or agitators according to expiry dates
- Conduct daily stock checks and arrange products by expiry date
Waste Disposal Management
- Collect and dispose of medical waste according to SOPs
- Label, scan, and track waste using the CS Tracker system
- Maintain proper documentation for waste traceability
- Ensure safe handling and disposal of bio-hazardous materials
Laboratory Cleaning & Maintenance
- Prepare disinfectant solutions for laboratory use
- Clean and sterilise laboratory equipment and surfaces
- Assist with blood spill clean-up and decontamination procedures
- Maintain refrigerators, freezers, sinks, and laboratory equipment hygiene
SHEQ Compliance
- Follow safety, health, environmental, and quality (SHEQ) procedures
- Support resolution of non-conformances and SOP deviations
- Ensure compliance with laboratory safety standards
General Duties
- Assist with additional laboratory tasks as required
- Complete laboratory assistant training within the required timeframe
Minimum Requirements
Education:
- Grade 12 (Matric) with Mathematics and one Science subject
Experience:
- No prior experience required
Skills:
- Basic computer literacy (MS Word, Excel, Outlook)
- Ability to follow procedures and SOPs accurately
- Strong attention to detail and responsibility
- Ability to work in a hygiene-sensitive environment
